The morning of September 17 was beautiful with the bright sunshine warming everything. The wind was almost still.

I took my Nagra Ares BB+ and a Rde NT4 with me to a pedestrian path in the western part of Reykjavik as I wanted to record the environmental sounds. The recording started just before 10 am. It was not as quiet as I thoght. Some 400 m to the south some construction work was going on as well as some 200-300 m to the north (on the left side).

The recording is in 24 bits 48 kHz.

The foam-windshield which comes with the mic was used as well as the Kitten from Rde.

I must say that I am very satisfied with the stereo immage og this mic which will be my replacement for Shure VP88. This recording is supposed to be an experiment.

At the eastern part of the village of Stvarfjrur en East Iceland there is a little grove where trees which have been planted there for the last 7 decades form a quiet place for people to enjoy the nature and the birds. In the morning of June 17 I and Hrafn Baldursson set up my recording geer. The Redwings were there as well as Ptarmigans, together with snipes, ringed plowers and other birds.

In the evening of December 1, 2014, we had a tempest from southwest in Southern Iceland. At Keflavik Airport the strongest blasts were at least 30 m/sec (108 km per hour). The weather is quite similar where I am living at Seltjarnarnes.

I placed 2 Rde NT1-A microphones in an AB-array with 30 cm spacing in the livingroom aproximately 2 m from the windows. It is quite interesting to sense the deep roaring of the house as an accompaniment to the wind, pressing through and some objects outside trying to leave the balcony. This recording describes what it is like staying alone at home as the tempest is raging outside.

Good headphones are strongly recommended.

This recording is best enjoyed by using headphones.

The annual Reykjavik Run was held on August 23. More than 1100 people participated in Marathon and Half-Marathon and over 8.000 in 10 km running. The event was recorded as has been done since 1998.

The first sample started around 09:05 when the first runners had arrived. Due to the noise from cars the recording before is not worth listening.

The second sample started around 10:00 when the first runners were approaching. Pay attention to how people tried to disturb the runners by driving, biking and walking against the stream.

The runners pass by like a river of people.

Recorded in an MS-Setup with Rde Nt-2A and NT-55. The recorder is as most often Nagra Ares BB+.

Recorded infront of Tjarnarbl 14 at Nesvegur, Seltjarnarnes.

This is the last recording from our trip to Northwest Iceland this summer.

In the morning of July 14, around 7 there was a little rain at Kirkjubl in Steingrmsfjrur, Northwest-Iceland. The drops can be heard on the roof of the guesthouse some 12 m away from the mics.

Many birds entertained us. Just to name some of them: golden plower, ringd plower, arctic tern, whimbrel, snipe, redwing, redshang and some more. A sheep was also heard.

There are some other birds which are not counted. It would be interesting if listeners would try to recognize them.

Recorded with 2 Sennheiser ME-62 on a Nagra Ares BB+.

Will the wind finally do some good?

In December, Landsvirkjun erected two wind turbines, in an area known as Hafi, within the construction area of Brfell Power Station, in the south of Iceland. The turbines have a total of 2 MW of installed power. The project is part of Landsvirkjuns research and development project on the advantageous of wind power in Iceland. There are a number of areas in Iceland that show great potential for the successful utilisation of wind energy.

The wind turbines each have a 900 kW capacity and together their generating capacity could be up to 5.4 GWh per year. The masts is 55 metres heigh and each spade measures 22 metres in length. When the spades are at their highest position the unit is 77 metres of height. Wind turbines developed for further energy production will in all likelihood be larger than the most powerful turbines presently operating in Iceland today, reaching 7.5MW.

When we were there on July 26 the wind was only 5-10 mYsec and the average power only about 75kW for each turbine. We went to the turbine further north as there were no tourists. There we captured the sound. It can be heard during the recording that the sound of the spades changes according to the wind.

Good headphones recommended.
