I and my wife, ElÝn, went on our Kea Soul EV north to the village of Hvammstangi in Northwest Iceland on Friday, October 13.

On the mountain of Holtav÷ruheii, which lies between southern and Northern Iceland, it was a strong headwind and rain.

The first recording is made on our way when we were heading to the north in Hrutafjordur. The reain and storm were quite hard.

The second recording is made the day after when we were heading up to the top of Holtav÷ruheii in a nice weather. We had to use the heater as it was a little cold outside. Notice the different surface of the road.

The 3. recording is catching the aproaching cars. The microphone was facing the left side in order to catch the sound of the cars.

The 4. recording depicts the sound in the tunnel of Hvalfj÷rur when cars are passing y.

VinsŠl tˇnlist Ý KÝna - Popular music in China (1973)

Fyrir sk÷mmu fannst gamalt segulband me ˙tvarps■Šttinum VinsŠl tˇnlist Ý KÝna sem ˙tvarpa var 29. Desember 1973.

Ůar fˇr undirritaur ß kostum Ý hrifningu sinni ß tˇnlistinni sem ■ß var vinsŠl Ý landinu og fjallai um f÷urlandi, flokkinn og Mao formann. Upphafsstefi var fengi ˙r ˇperunni Shajiabang frß 1967.

Recently I found an old magnetic tape with a radioshow which was broadcast on Icelandic Radio at December 29 1973.

Ther I enjoyed myself introducing the most popular music of China at that time, mainly in praise of the motherland, the party and Chairman Maozedon.

The first one is taken from the modern revolutionary opera of Shajiabang (The East is red), and then songs like Sing of our Socialist Motherland, a song about the party, Long live Chairman Mao, The Train to Shaoshan etc.

This radioshow is a good example of the liberal policy of the Icelandic radio at that time.

Have a good time.

On July 14 2014 I and my wife were driving en North-west Iceland heading south towards the Gauksmřri Lodge . As we had been travelling for some time we decided to take a rest in Bitrufj÷rur. We went to a side road and turned off tghe engine.Shortly afterwards the phone played The East is read and when I answered a producer from PRI

In Boston, David Leveille, was on the phone. I had caught his attention on a post list and he had contacted me earlier regarding some of my recordings. Now he wanted to make a Skype interview. As I was a little reluctant, due to the fact that the quality might not be satisfying, he asked if I did have a recorder with me. It would be possible to have the interview. I just needed to have my phone in on hand and the recorder in the other palm. I would record the whole conversation and my voice would later on be mixed together with his voice. As I had heard of this methode before and never used it in my broadcast work, I was eager to try it. The result is here below.

The interview is marked by the fact that I was not quite prepared. But the sound environment is quite interesting.

Recorded with an Olympus LS-11.

The interview was later broadcast on August 26 2014.

Tv÷ Ýslensk l÷g Ý kÝnverskum b˙ningi - Two Icelandic songs played on Chinese musical instruments

Nokkur umrŠa hefur ori um hversu lengi efni varveitist ß geisladiskum. A lot of discussions has ben going on about how long materials will last on Cd-disks.

Some time ago I tried to copy a 10 years old cd with a concert given by a group of 6 musicians of The Traditional Music Ensemble of The Beijing Film Studio who gave a concert in Iceland in 2002. It was damaged.

Today I decided to try again. I found out that the piece of paper, containing som information about the contents, was a little uneven. After fixing this the disk could be copied. Maybe a new diskdrive made it also possible.

The musicians played 2 Icelandic melodies: I looked for blue flowers by Gylfi Ů. GÝslason and The Westman Islands by Arnthor Helgason

ENGLISH

The city of Qufu in Shandong Province, China, attracts many people as there is The Temple of Confucius (551-476 bc), the sage, who has made more influence on Chinese society than any other philosopher.

His family lived there until 1937 when the Japanese increased their occupation of China. It has even been stated than certain parts of Mao Zedong's theories, are influenced by Confucius.

On May 17 a delegation from The Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society visited the temple. I asked my guide, Li Yanfeng, to stay with me a little behind as I wanted to record the environment. She was very good at finding suitable places. This sound immage is made of 3 recordings, ending infront of Confuciu's tomb which is located a while from the temple itself. We were taken there with an el-car. The environment was a little more noisy there than in the temple itself.

The sounds of birds and people filled the air.

THE CHIME OF THE OLD RAILWAY STATION IN BEIJING

The tune "The East is Red" is the song of my life as those, who have enjoyed this blog, know. First it was a lovesong which later was changed to a song in praise of Chairman Mao Zedong and was for some time a kind of a national anthem in China.

The chimes at the old railway station in Beijing still play this beautiful and magnificent tune. It was recorded on April 3 2012 at 17:00. An Olympus LS-11 was used with a windscreen as it was quite windy that afternoon.
